After the Volkswagen ID.3, it is the turn of the Cupra Born to lower its price. The electric car now falls below 40,000 euros and simplifies its range. Enough to better compete with the MG4, which is no longer eligible for the ecological bonus.
If electric cars remain a little more expensive than their thermal equivalents, the difference is becoming smaller and smaller. Specialists even estimate that parity will be reached by the end of the decade, and in particular thanks to the drop in the cost of lithium, among other things.
A new decline
A favorable situation, that allows manufacturers to launch into a major price war since last year. This was declared by Tesla, which reduced the price of its Model 3 and Model Y by 13,000 euros, and it is far from over. BYD is indeed announcing an even more intense battle over the coming months. Message received for the Volkswagen group, which remains number 3 in electric vehicles worldwide, despite the major crisis it has been going through for several months already.
But that is set to change, as a vast plan of attack has been unveiled. This is reflected in particular by a drop in the price of certain electric models. This is for example the case of the Cupra Born, production of which was interrupted last year due to lack of demand. But that will soon be history since the electric compact has just overhauled its range to become more affordable. This is what the Spanish firm announces in a press release just published.

From now on, the rival of the Renault Mégane E-Tech will become more competitive, with a price that starts from 39,090 euros. The latter is valid for the entry-level version equipped with the L battery, which has a capacity of 58 kWh. The latter offers a range of 422 kilometers according to the WLTP cycle, which should reassure the most hesitant motorists. And good news is that the car is still eligible for the ecological bonus of 4,000 euros, which gives an entry ticket of 35,090 euros.
Enough to compete even more head-on with the MG4, which starts from 22,990 euros. If the Chinese compact is no longer eligible for state aid, it nevertheless benefits from a generous discount of 7,000 euros without conditions. As a reminder, the latter has a 51 kWh battery, which offers a range of 350 kilometers according to the European approval cycle.
An interesting endowment
But if you want to benefit from a larger battery on your Cupra Born, know that this is also entirely possible. And for good reason, the manufacturer offers another more generous alternative, which has a capacity of 77 kWh. The latter allows you to benefit from a good autonomy of 550 kilometers. Enough to convince all those who believe that electric cars cannot run long enough.
As a reminder, the electric compact can handle a charge of up to 125 kW in direct current, which allows you to recover 100 kilometers in just 7 minutes. The car boasts no less than 230 horsepower and can go from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.6 to 7 seconds depending on the version chosen. But is it really well equipped at this very advantageous price level? If the allocation is less important than for the ID.3, whose price has also been reduced, it remains interesting.

Indeed, the latter notably includes bucket seats, 19-inch rims, the 12-inch central touch screen or even the reversing camera, and the front and rear LED lights. Enough to attract potential customers, even though the car left us with a good impression when we took it in hand. But that's not all, because it is also eligible for social leasing from 109 euros per month. Too bad the latter ended for this year, a victim of its success.
The Cupra Born can also be chosen for long-term rental, with a monthly rent of 260 euros. An offer that includes the super-bonus and the 2,500 euros conversion bonus, and which also requires a first rent of 9,500 euros.
